What Hope Valley is built from
Durham's country-club suburb, developed from 1926 on curving streets around a Donald Ross golf course. Tudor and Colonial Revival houses on large wooded lots, formal rooms drawn before open plans existed, and a steady run of later infill among the originals.
Settled households with rooms that are still furnished as rooms rather than as spaces. The most expensive floor coverings on the route are here, and that does not only mean antique hand-knotted work — a great many of these houses also have something newer that was bought as silk.
The Hope Valley problem
Rayon sold as silk is the most disappointing material we handle, and this is where it turns up. Viscose, bamboo silk, banana silk, art silk: all the same thing, regenerated cellulose spun out of chemically dissolved wood pulp, sold on a sheen that is perfectly genuine and without the rest of the story. Wet cellulose loses most of its strength, so a viscose rug that meets a spill, a dog or an enthusiastic cleaner is crushed permanently by the next footstep across that patch, and the broken fibres lie flat and go dull in a way no amount of grooming lifts. Plain water yellows it, because the cellulose discolours as it dries. It mats into a grey slick along a traffic lane within a couple of years whatever anyone does. It can be cleaned — carefully, with very little moisture — and it will never be brought back to new. Two habits keep them alive: not in dining rooms and not in doorways, and nothing wetter than a damp cloth from anybody who has not been told what it is.
