What Trinity Park is built from
Durham, immediately north of Duke's East Campus — the Trinity College ground the university grew out of after the college moved to Durham in 1892 — and a short walk from Ninth Street. Foursquares, Colonial Revivals and bungalows from the 1890s through the 1920s, a good many divided into apartments in the middle of the last century and since put back together, with original registers still set into the floors.
Faculty, medical staff, graduate households and owners who have been here for decades, in houses that have been heated by four different systems over their lifetime and still carry the ductwork of at least two of them.
The Trinity Park problem
Look for a hard grey line running parallel to a wall, or straight across the middle of a room, that does not wash out with the rest of the soil. That is not traffic. In an old house with ducted heat retrofitted into it, air moves through gaps in the boards, under closed doors and around the edges of rooms, and wherever it has to squeeze through something, whatever it is carrying gets filtered out onto the first fibre in its path. If a rug lies over that gap, the rug is the filter, and fine soot and cooking particulate deposit along a line that darkens over years. The second half of the same problem is heat: a floor supply register partly covered by a rug fires dry air straight into the pile all winter, and wool driven repeatedly down to a very low moisture content goes brittle and breaks instead of bending, so the rug sheds along one strip and nowhere else. Neither is solved by cleaning alone. Move the rug clear of the register, close the obvious gaps in the floor, and the line stops coming back after a wash.
