What Cary is built from
A railroad village of fewer than eight thousand people in 1970 and one of the largest towns in the state today, built out west of Raleigh under unusually strict development rules — which is why so much of it looks deliberate. Ranch houses from the 1960s and 1970s near the old centre, then subdivision after subdivision of two-storey houses on crawlspaces and slabs, with a great deal of recent townhouse building among them.
About as internationally connected a town as North Carolina has, on the back of the research campuses and the technology employers along the corridor. A large share of these households keep family in two countries, and rugs travel in both directions.
The Cary problem
A rug that has just crossed an ocean has usually had a worse month than a rug that has sat on a floor for ten years. A shipping container is an unconditioned steel box: it is loaded in humid air, crosses cold nights and hot days, and the moisture in that air condenses on the steel above the cargo and rains back down onto it, over and over, for weeks. Wool takes that up and holds it. If the rug was wrapped in plastic for the journey — and it usually was, to keep it clean — then what arrives is a sealed damp parcel rather than a protected one, and it commonly stays sealed in a hallway until somebody has an afternoon to deal with it. That is why the smell people describe on a newly arrived rug tends to show up in the second or third week rather than on the day it lands. A rug that came in that way wants unrolling and opening out flat, a look at both faces, and a wash before it meets the rest of the house rather than after.
