Rug Cleaning in Apex

Collection and delivery in Apex are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.

The Houses

What Apex is built from

A small railroad town at the high point of the old line — the water tower's claim about the peak of good living is the town's own, not a developer's — with a compact nineteenth-century centre along Salem Street and an enormous amount of subdivision built around it since the 1990s. Slabs and crawlspaces, open family rooms, tiled entries, and garages that the whole household walks through instead of the front door.

Young families in houses furnished more or less all at once. Rugs are bought for the room, the traffic and the dog, which in practice means synthetic construction in the large sizes and a good deal bought online without anyone ever standing on it first.

What We Find Here

The Apex problem

The washable rug has changed what people believe they can do at home, and the mistake that follows is expensive. A rug designed for a machine is a thin printed face sheet over a separate grip layer, made light enough to fit a drum and built to be laundered. Nothing else in the house is. The same instinct applied to a wool rug — into the washer, or into a bath with detergent, or out to the drive behind a pressure washer — does three things that cannot be undone. It felts the wool, because agitation plus heat plus alkaline detergent is precisely how felt is manufactured on purpose. It shrinks a cotton foundation unevenly, so the rug comes back wavy and no longer square. And it sets whatever dye was going to move, permanently, into whatever was lying next to it. The other half of this is the hand-tufted rug, the commonest thing here after synthetics: it is held together by a layer of adhesive, and the one experience that adhesive will not survive is being soaked and spun. If the label does not say plainly that the whole rug is washable, it is not.

If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
