A new house is not automatically a dry house, and in this climate it is frequently the opposite. In July it is delivering air at a dew point in the low seventies to a system that only removes moisture while it happens to be cooling — and a well-insulated house with shaded rooms does not call for much cooling. The result is a two-year-old house running an indoor humidity that would embarrass a hundred-year-old one, and the first thing to report it is the wool rug in whichever room sits furthest from a supply vent, usually upstairs, where the air is stillest and the door stays shut. It reads to the owner as a rug problem, because the rug is the thing that smells. It is a house problem. A hygrometer costs almost nothing, and a rug that is musty again three months after a wash is telling you to look at the humidity rather than at the rug.
